The price reduction of the Oculus Rift means the platform will not only achieve more market share, but reel more customers into the pricey virtual reality market. In other words, games sold on Steam that support OpenVR will automatically be compatible with the Oculus Rift and the Touch controllers.

Instead of going all in with the Oculus Rift and Touch for $798, you're now looking at spending $598 for the lot. "The more people in VR, the better it is".

"We believe this lower entry price will attract consumers to PC VR at a faster pace", Rubin said.

The Oculus Rift was $600 when it launched in spring 2016, and now that's the price of the Rift and the Oculus Touch controllers, which previously cost an extra $200. "There are two fundamental things that we need to push on to do that".

A price drop is a coup of sorts for Oculus.

In a move that seeks to break down the financial barrier keeping many potential VR users from adopting the technology, Oculus has announced a significant price cut for the Rift headset, Touch controllers, and standalone Oculus Sensors. "This is how the technology business works".

In the past few months, moves have been made to bring down the price of the Oculus kit, including a $499 Oculus certified PC that met the specifications of to run the VR system.

Rival VR firm HTC'c Vive said it will not be reducing the price of its own system in response to Oculus' announced price cut. Facebook bought Oculus for about US$2 billion as part of Zuckerberg's effort to realize his vision.

"We know that price is definitely one of the concerns", Nate Mitchell, Oculus's head of product, said, while noting improvements in manufacturing and falling component prices let the company pass savings onto consumers. First, device maker LG revealed during the Games Developer Conference that it has teamed up with Valve Software to produce a new VR headset based on SteamVR, the very platform HTC uses with the Vive. "We feel this is the right time to get really aggressive".
