May 29th News: Costa to Valencia?.

Costa going to Valencia?

Spanish side Valencia has expressed interest in signing Montpellier attacking midfielder Alberto Costa. Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin says that he is not interested in losing Costa, but if the price is right, he would consider it. Nicollin seems to be interested in no less that 8 million Euros, which would bring a lot to a team that only has a budget of 25 million Euros. Still, Nicollin says that Costa is committed to the team, after recently signing a 3-year contract with Montpellier HSC.

Yesterday, I wrote an article saying that Lorient might be a team that suffers most from the upcoming transfer season. In that article, I also stated that Sylvain Marchal might be the only decent player left on the team. Well, that might also not happen as St. Etienne are looking to grab up three Lorient players.

According to L’Equipe, ASSE is in talks with Lorient on acquiring the services of defender Jeremy Morel and midfielder Morgan Amalfitano. The departure of these players, along with what has happened, and what is being talked about as well, could leave Christian Gourcuff’s side with a lot less talent than they had in their ‘less-than-impressive’ season in 2009-10.

Captain and defender Sylvain Marchel is expected to join ASSE as well, according to FIFA.com.

May 26th news: Blanc to sign contract today with FFF

Grenoble, a Championnat National team in August?

According to L’Equipe, Laurent Blanc is expected to sign his contract to become the next French National Team coach today. Blanc is expected to sign a two-year contract with Les Bleus. L’Equipe also says that Blanc is expected to be paid about 100,000 Euros a month as well. Blanc’s assistant coach at Bordeaux, Jean-Louis Gasset, will also be joining the new French manager as his assistant coach with Les Bleus. Lyon’s Sporting Director, Marino Faccioli, is also expected to be joining the team shortly as well.

Earlier in the day, FFF President Jean-Pierre Escalettes, denied that the FFF were going to be signing Blanc today. But it seems more and more through the media outlets that the deal will be done today, if it hasn’t already.

Blanc isn’t the only manager that has found himself a new job. Former ASSE and Lyon manager Alain Perrin is expected to take a managerial position with WAC Casablanca starting next season. The deal should be formalized soon, but he is expected to be with the team for the next two years. What a fall from grace, one might say.

Michel Estevan of the newly promoted Arles-Avignon, has also extended his contract with the club for two years. Yet, the advisory board of the team still has to approve the new contract on Monday.

Ligue 1 Matchday 27 : status quo

Up...

The clash of the titans ended up in a 1-1 tie, in a match that showcased the respective strengths of Bordeaux and Montpellier. Lyon having pitifully tied with the lowly Boulogne the night before, the two southern teams were going to battle for the leadership of L1, and things didn’t exactly go as planned for Bordeaux.

Just like against Marseille, the Girondins had one of their central defenders sent off, this time Mickaël Ciani, only this time it took place at the 32nd minute, and it caused a penalty. Set-piece specialist Alberto Costa walked up and took the penalty, which was saved by Cédric Carrasso, for whom the emotional roller coaster will have only started by then. Replays show that a few players from each team had entered the box before the PK was taken, but the referee decided not to pay attention to that, even if a Bordeaux player who had entered the box managed to clear the ball.

The drama doesn’t end here, as 8 minutes after that, Matthieu Chalmé was called for a blatant handball in the box, off a Montano header. The voluntary hand contact apparently didn’t warrant a second yellow card for the right-back, something Bordeaux can fell lucky about. The Columbian striker Montano relieved Costa of his PK-taking duties and took his chance at defeating a very confident Carrasso. The PK was in, a beautiful right-footed curler in the right corner of the net, but the referee saw it differently, and ordered for the PK to be taken again, since again both teams’ players had entered the box before the PK was taken. Admittedly a weird decision since there was no impact on the penalty iself. Montano was therefore asked to shoot again, and this time softly placed the ball to Carrasso’s low right-hand side, who had perfectly anticipated Montano’s intentions. Once again there were some renegade players who had entered the box, and once again a Bordeaux defender managed to clear the ball. (more…)

Ligue 1 Matchday 27 : a leader change?

Montpellier and Aït-Fana face their biggest challenge of '10

Undoubtedly the big game of the weekend will be the one that pins Bordeaux against Montpellier, the leader playing host to their follower on Sunday night in a high-stakes game. Bordeaux has slowed down in league play since the beginning of 2010, which has given Montpellier, Lille, Lyon and Marseille the chance to get closer. The Girondins and Montpellier are tied at the top of the table with 51 points, and Lyon follows closely with 49 points. We could therefore have a leader change, even if it is unlikely. Also, bear in mind that Bordeaux still has two games to play, which skews the reading of the table and what we can take from it (I’ve touched on this issue here).

Montpellier has a so-so record against bigger clubs, beating Lyon, Marseille (once) and Lille , losing to Bordeaux and Marseille (once). This game will be their real litmus test, and will provide answers as to whether they can run for champion, or whether they need to refocus and “settle” for a Champion’s League spot. (more…)

Matchday 25 Saturday previews

As I said in the Toulouse preview, this is going to be a pretty boring week in Ligue 1, on paper that is. For some reason, whenever I say that it is going to be a boring week, it ends up being a week of upsets and far from boring. So lets look at today’s matchups.

AS Saint-Etienne
 vs.
  Montpellier Hérault SC

Montpellier looks to continue their unbelievable winning ways as they travel up the A7 to play the struggling St. Etienne. These are two teams with very different seasons. Montpellier was expected to be fighting for their lives by keeping out of the relegation zone while Les Verts were expected to be, well, midtable. And, as many of you probably know, Montpellier is nowhere near the relegation zone and St. Etienne is hovering around the it.

Ligue 1 Mercato Preview: Part I

Could David Pollet, who has shown his worth with Paris FC, find himself on a Ligue 1 team in the winter?

With the winter transfer window about to open, Everything French Football going to do a five-part series about what Ligue 1 teams should doing during the 2009-10 winter Mercato. While some teams like Bordeaux basically have to do nothing, there are other teams that are in a need of an overhaul.

Therefore, we will start this series today looking at Auxerre, Bordeaux, Boulogne and Grenoble.

AJ Auxerre Needs: Scoring – Right Attacking Midfielder or Striker
Auxerre started off this season looking quite weak. They couldn’t buy a win. And then, somehow, they were able to find their grove, moving from last to first in the Ligue 1 table. Now they seemed to have fallen back to earth and could use a little help from the transfer market.

It is easy to say that Auxerre’s problem this season is scoring. While it has to be said that Ireneusz Jelen, Benoit Pedretti, Daniel Niculae and Dennis Oliech are good offensive players, they just don’t seem to be clicking. Right now, Dennis Oliech is somewhat playing out of position on the right-wing, as he is naturally a striker. It might be better for Auxerre to look at getting someone on that right side to increase the depth of their scoring squad, which they desperately need right now.

Auxerre 1st place? Crazy Saturday in Ligue 1

Danijel Ljuboja: Grenoble's only offense

I thought today was going to be a boring day in Ligue 1. I actually have a flu right now, and thought that this would be the perfect day to relax, sleep, and try to get over this virus.

Boy was I wrong.

If you would have told me that Axuerre would be at the top of the table today and that Grenoble would draw against the mighty Lyon, I would have told you that you were crazy. Seems like I was the crazy one.

So, lets look at our new leaders. At the start of the year, Auxerre was in last place. They started off with three losses, and their fourth game was a draw. In all of those game, Auxerre failed to score a goal. Now, Auxerre has a 7-game winning streak, they have gone from the cellar to first place, and are now a threat to Bordeaux and Lyon.

Today they defeated Monaco, another team that was trying to prove a point. Though The Principality was without Ligue 1 leading scorer Nene, the Monaco side really needed a win today to show that they are a contender for a Champions League spot. The lack of offense, and Nene, spelled doom for Monaco today. Monaco is now in 6th place, just one point out of the Europa League spot.
