French football “Bullet-point News” for December 14th, 2010.

On a daily basis, we are going to do a little bit of “bullet-point” news for the day. If you want to know what is going on in Ligue 1 without having to read all of the long articles, or translate them, we are going to just lay out some important headlines just so you can get an idea of what is going on in the Ligue 1 world.

  • Cris will be returning to Lyon for today’s match against Montpellier.
  • Rod Fanni possibly Cesar Azpilicueta’s replacement at Marseille?
  • Mevlut Erding will miss another match for PSG against Brest.
  • Crisis at Ligue 2 Grenoble, as they lost against yesterday, the club was asked by the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG) to put $5 million into an escrow account. They are likely facing bankruptcy (more to come)
  • Michael Ciani is being targeted by Tottenham for a possible more in the winter transfer.

Ligue 1 Mercato Preview: Part III

Are Ben Arfa's days numbered at Marseille?

In this series we will look at the following teams and the winter transfer: Lyon, Marseille, Monaco, Montpellier.

 Olympique Lyonnais needs: Central defense
As has been well documented on this website by our Lyon contributor Martin Michelot, the biggest problem that Lyon has right now is their defense. While Aly Cissokho looks to be the real deal (even if Milan say otherwise, by disputing his health, which was Lyon’s gain), the central defense seems to be questionable. Boumsong and Cris, while decent, play on an inconstant level. One day they can have a decent game. The next it can be really bad. Still Cris seems to have more positive games than Boumsong.

The same thing can be said for their right-back Anthony Reveillere. There are times that he plays a great game. On the other hand, he can have really bad matches as well. Therefore, a near overhaul of their back line is really needed.

Unlike the other teams that we have mentioned in the previous parts of this series, Lyon can spend a lot of money. In the last transfer window, Lyon was the third highest spenders in the transfer market next to Real Madrid and Manchester City. Therefore, they can go after some big name players and stock up their defense. Teams like Lorient, Auxerre and Toulouse have a number of defensive players that they might get rid of…but it won’t be cheap.

Ligue 1 Fantasy Football Guide

I know there are many people out there who are English-speaking that try to play as many online fantasy football games as possible. Heck, I even play fantasy basketball from time to time, having no idea what I am doing. And with many websites, like Yahoo, offering French fantasy football, some fans need guidance on how the pick their starting line up for their team.

I have been involved with fantasy sports since 1988, when I played in a fantasy hockey league on an internet program called Q-Link, which was available for the Commodore 64. I have won my fair share of championships throughout the years. And, hopefully, this site can help you with your starting lineup if you are in a French football fantasy league, but have no idea who to start.

We will be doing this every week, and hopefully you will enjoy it!

And if you have a question about starting players, leave a comment and we can get back to you.

So, on to Matchday 15. Who to play and who not to play is the question. And to start off, I will give you my starters for the week.

But just a note before we start…make sure you do not start any Monaco or Montpellier players as that game has been postponed due to swine flu.
